The modern geographic area is known as Naga el-Gherira (Arabic: الغريرة). Since being discovered, ‘Gebelein Man A’ has been displayed in the Museum. The previous study showed he was a young man of 18-21 years old, who died from a stab wound to his back. “Incredibly, at over 5,000 years of age, they push back the evidence for tattooing in Africa by a millennium,” he said. The Gebelein Man tells us the predynastic Egyptians clearly held it a priority that their deceased make it into some sort of afterlife, and probably spent a good deal of limited resources to ensure their deceased a safe and easy passage.
