The nursing theory chosen is that of need theory by Virginia Henderson. Henderson has contributed a lot in nursing throughout her journey as a nurse. She intended to define the unique focus of nursing practice, but at the end, it ends up being one the nursing theories that are being used in every clinical setting. Virginia Henderson theory is very easily understandable and covers a broad range of nursing especially the APRN as independence was a goal for Henderson’s nursing goal besides patient’s health promotion. The definition of nursing is clear and very lucid and applicable to her assumptions and components of theory. Henderson's Definition of Nursing is still directly applicable to professional nursing today.

Virginia Henderson was famous for her Definition of Nursing which states that "The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge. Ø Henderson wrote three classics: Basic Principles of Nursing Care (1960), The Nature of Nursing (1966), and Principles and Practice of Nursing (1978). They offer nurses an understandable and coherent philosophy, as well as a synthesis of research and expert opinion about current nursing practice and individualized care. Noted nursing theorist Virginia Henderson (1897-1996), often referred to as the "first lady of nursing," developed a nursing model based on activities of living. Henderson had the pioneering view that nursing stands separately from medicine and that nursing consists of more than simply following physicians' orders. The Henderson theory of nursing was developed by Virginia Henderson.
